Transcript – Flux of Seawater and Animals in a Submarine Cave

Howdy, I’m Tom Iliffe, a professor of marine biology at Texas A&M Galveston, our three project involved the biological and hydrological investigation of Giant Cave, a submarine cave lying beneath the Belize Barrier Reef title exchange of seawater into such caves provides an important source of organic nutrients and dissolved oxygen to cave animals using high resolution water, current meters and electronic water quality analyzers, supplemented by biological collections. We examined the sustainability of cave ecosystems. We found tides within the submerged cave nearly identical to those in the ocean. Cave water became saltier and cooler with increasing depth lows. Dissolved oxygen levels were found near the cave ceiling and strongest water currents occurred on the outflowing tides.
